Garage Door Spring Replacement
If you heard a loud bang from the garage and now the door won't lift, a spring has almost certainly broken. Spring replacement is one of our most common jobs, and we carry springs to get most doors working again on the same visit.
Signs of a broken or worn spring
- A sudden loud bang from the garage
- Door very heavy or impossible to lift by hand
- A visible gap in a coiled torsion spring above the door
- Door lifting crooked or one cable hanging slack
- Motor straining, then stopping
Leave spring work to a technician
Springs are wound under high tension to counterbalance the door. Releasing or winding them without the right tools and training is one of the most common causes of serious garage door injuries. Please don't attempt it, and don't keep using the motor on a door with a broken spring.
Replace springs in pairs
Most double doors have two springs that were installed at the same time and have done the same number of cycles. When one breaks, the other is usually close behind. Replacing both together saves a second call-out and keeps the door evenly balanced.
Getting the balance right
After fitting new springs we set the tension so the door sits still at half-open and lifts with light, even effort. A properly balanced door is easier on the motor, the cables and the panels, and lasts longer overall.

Common questions
How much does garage door spring replacement cost?
It depends on the door type, spring size and whether one or both springs are replaced. Call us with your door type and we'll give you a clear price range over the phone and a firm price on site before any work starts.
Can I still open the door with a broken spring?
We strongly advise against it. Without the spring the door's full weight is on you or the motor, and it can drop without warning.
